Hickory Landmarks Society

The Hickory Landmarks Society is a non-profit organization committed to serving the Hickory, NC region by leading in the protection of historically or architecturally significant neighborhoods, individual landmarks and traditions. We do this by means of education, advocacy, property management, and ensuring responsible historic preservation as part of community growth.

Hickory Landmarks Society began in 1967 when Francis Moody, Edna Barringer and others organized a small group of people to save the J. Summie Propst House from destruction. The following year the organization was incorporated and has collected Hickory’s history ever since. The vision of the board is to preserve the heritage and stories of the entire community in addition to preserving the built environment.

HLS owns and operates the following historic landmark properties;  (1) The J. Summie Propst House, built 1883, re-stored and opened to the public in 1979, (2) Maple Grove, built 1874/1883, restored and opened to public as a museum in 1981 and  houses HLS offices,  (3)  1895 Corinth Church Parsonage, acquired in 1987, restored 1995-96, now used as rental facility for a non-profit organization, (4) the 1893 Houk’s Chapel, acquired in 2004, restored 2009, and (5) Clement Geitner House, built 1890, restored 1997, acquired 2023 and serving as a commercial rental space.
